You Tube Tuesday - Happy Birthday, Dude

The best presents are ones that show the person really knows what makes you smile.  I got a few gifts like that this week for my birthday and one of them was a turtle video!  (Thank you, Corinne.)  Despite the fact that Crush is my favorite turtle character ever to grace the big screen, I had not seen him sing Happy Birthday until last week.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

P.S.  I don't know when Pokey's birthday is exactly, but I got her as a birthday present when I turned 14.  I celebrate her birthday sometime around mine each year.  So, today, let's sing it for her.

Turtle Telepathy?

I've just learned that turtles talk to each other to coordinate when they hatch. How awesome is that?! Life continues to prove that the oldest species may be the wisest.

Bucks For Bogs

If I lived in the northeast and owned a bit of the wetlands where bog turtles are known to reside right now, I could get a reward for helping preserve the land; for helping to save North America's tiniest reptile. How cool is that?

The Call of the Wild Man

I first saw the Turtle Man on YouTube a few years ago, catching snapping turtles with his bare hands. He helps move the turtles to new locations so they don't bother the homeowner in a style reminiscencent of the Crocodile Hunter or Mick Dundee. His brand new reality TV show premiered last night. Did anyone catch it? I don't get the channel...

Surfer Jamie O'Brien's Wild Ride

I feel a bit bad for pro surfer Jamie O'Brien right now. There is a picture circulating the internet that shows him riding a sea turtle. You might be wondering why people would care? Well, it is against the law. We don't want endangered species getting overly comfortable interacting with humans. I guess that is because, inevitably, someone would harm the animal. However, given the opportunity, I'm not sure I would be able to resist reaching out to touch a creature as magical as the green sea turtle. Scientists get to do it all the time.

Study of Sea Turtle Danger Zones

If you want to know where sea turtles are most threatened, check out this article. Apparently, the "big winner" is India. I have always wanted to go there. Perhaps that will be the vacation where I also try to help the sea turtles? It's still a dream vacation at this point, so why not say I'm going to do it all?! Of course, there are places a bit closer to home where I could help too....

Pig Nosed Turtle Rescue

I'm happy to report on a Hong Kong pig-nosed turtle seizure with a happy ending. These baby turtles were headed to the illegal pet trade in Hong Kong but have since been rescued and nursed to health and they are now returning home. Not all of them survived though. Turtles don't handle stress very well at a young age. Still, I'm thankful to see people diligently trying to stop the illegal turtle trade.

Etsy Item of the Week - Turtle Footstool

When I started this blog, I had hoped to feature one handmade turtle themed item per week.  I haven't been keeping it up regularly, but hope today's post is the first in a new regular habit.

Turtle Footstool in Solid Oak by ilbok on Etsy

Today when I browsed etsy, this footstool caught my eye.  Others are making beautiful jewelry and crochet turtles, but there were no other pieces of functional woodwork.  This little guy is so strong that even I could stand on him, but he's probably more appropriate for a children's bathroom than my den.  I hope he finds a good home soon.  I also hope the Acorn Furniture Folks make and sell many more of this adorable design.

Alice Keck Park

If you asked me to list the things I would miss most about Santa Barbara, Alice Keck Park would definitely be on my list.  It is a gorgeous park in downtown that is landscaped with native plants and enhanced with a turtle and duck filled pond.  It's a landmark example of conservation and home to my favorite animal.  These are the places one loves most... and can take hundreds of pictures in under an hour.  Hehe.  Enjoy!

YOU TUBE TUESDAY - Tour de Turtles 2011

Of the many things being done to promote turtle causes, Tour de Turtles is likely the most creative.  Begun in 2008, this turtle marathon is a race and educational journey to see which turtle travels the farthest in it's annual migration.  The sea turtles are sponsored by conservation agencies and corporations all over the world and tracked using satellite telemetry.  Their website is absolutely amazing.  The home page shows what place each turtle is in at the moment and how far they have swum to date.  From there you can click to a world map with drawings of the routes each participant is swimming.  However, without a doubt, the "meet the turtles" page is my favorite.  If you scroll your cursor over the turtles, they do an animated dance.  It is completely hilarious.  Pokey and I are routing for Bubbles because we like her dance the best.  She's in 8th place at the moment, but we believe in her.  Go Bubbles, GO!!!

I couldn't find any videos of Bubbles, but it seems that Rapunzel has a sufficient fan base to land herself an appearance on You Tube.  So, without further adieu, happy You Tube Tuesday everyone!  I hope you'll enjoy this break from my humorous turtle video contributions.

Turtle Reef at Sea World® San Diego

As of this summer, Pokey and I live about 215 miles away from the largest sea turtle display in the world.  That is when they opened the Turtle Reef exhibit at Sea World® in San Diego.  In August, I paid my beloved sea turtle friends a visit.

The nearly 300,000 gallon tank is breathtaking.  Wall-to-wall coral reefs are home to nearly 60 hawksbill and green sea turtles and a vibrant display of tropical fish.  I stood there staring with the childlike wonder of a four year old for nearly five minutes before snapping a hundred pictures with my camera.

It was apparent that the turtles don't always like their tank mates...

or perhaps they just get bored and like to put on a show.  (No sea turtles were injured during this fin and neck nibbling moment, however, many bystanders were overcome with giggles watching them play.)

The tank at Sea World® is also home to quite a few baby sea turtles which hatched there in 2009.  Although some may feel more than a sigh over the fact that their fins have never truly felt the currents of the big blue, I think they are quite happy in this serene environment, carefully protected from the harsh realities of everyday ocean life.  Sea World® shows it's dedication to sea turtles in the wild through it's non-profit foundation, the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund, which donates millions of dollars to animal conservation projects every year.  It made me smile to know my ticket proceeds would spoil not only these turtles, but also other needy populations all over the world... and many other animals at the park and elsewhere.

Farewell Turtle Dreams

Image © Rachel Hoyt.  All rights reserved.

I'm one of those people that knows you have to live life today or you'll miss out on the special moments, but somehow, despite living near it for 15 years, I failed to visit Turtle Dreams before it closed.  I've heard about the "place in Montecito for rescued turtles" for years and wished I could build an extravagant enclosure for my turtle Pokey for even longer, but somehow I never tried to visit until last week.  Jeanie Vaughan rushed to answer the my call just ten seconds after the answering tape began, but moments later her tired yet cheerful voice told me it was not a good time for me to visit because they were closing down.

Jeanie and her husband Dennis retired to Montecito in 1995 with 15 turtles.  By 2008 they had built their own private zoo and were caring for 500 rescued turtles and tortoises.  These days it is just Jeanie, her daughter Christy, and community support that care for the elaborate collection.  Jeanie says she has friends all over the world helping her find new homes for the turtles and tortoises currently living with her.  I hope that wherever they go, they will always remember the woman who showed them a small slice of heaven, but feel equally pampered, loved and nurtured by their new environment.

I think the thing that is hardest about loving turtles is knowing that if you nurture them well, it is highly likely they will outlive you.  It is every parent's worst nightmare to leave their child penniless and forced to take care of themselves.  Nearly every turtle owner must face this terror, or worse, the knowledge that their inadequacies as a caretaker may have shortened the life of a mystical creature.

Jeanie, Dennis and Christy Vaughan have offered a dreamlike experience to turtles and turtle lovers for over a decade.  Pokey and I wish to thank them for their years of service.  Your contribution to turtle and tortoise conservation will not be forgotten.

FOOTNOTES:

An anonymous commenter below states that they are close friends with Jeanie Vaughan and that she wants the public to know she is not closing down completely.  Call Turtle Dreams at (805)969-5128 for more information.

Topaz & Tillman saw this post and wanted to say thank you to Jeanine for finding them a lovely home.

Hurricane Irene's Smallest Victims

Many baby sea turtle nests were unearthed, destroyed and / or relocated by Hurricane Irene. I learned from this article that my first instinct in this situation is not correct. Though I may want to "rescue" the tiny turtle and take it to a conservation group, they are actually more likely to survive if I leave them on the beach to fight with nature. So, its probably a good thing I live on the west coast. I'm not sure I could just sit there and watch the hatchlings get battered by the storm.

Shame on Snapperfest

Just because the snapping turtle is sort of the ugly duckling of the species doesn't make it ok to swing them around your head like a rubber chicken to stretch out it's neck.  Many of you probably agree with me and are wondering why I would even bother to bring up such an obvious fact.  Swinging any animal like a lasso would be considered cruel, right?  Well, that is what I thought, but apparently not everyone agrees.  Snapperfest 2011 will be held today, August 20, 2011 in Ohio County, Indiana despite an attempt by PETA to put a stop to it.  The Snapperfest supporters claim they aren't doing anything wrong because they've caught the animals with their bare hands and they "don't kill them".  Whether or not that second part is true is definitely up for debate.  Some sources say that many of the turtles die not long after the event from stress related injuries.  As much as it pains me to say it, I hope they at least use those turtles for the local delicacies they treasure at it's expense.  I would prefer you don't play with your food before you eat it...  no, scratch that.  I'd prefer you don't eat turtles at all.  However, if you must, please try to get all your turtle traumatizing pleasure out of the least number of animals, ok?  You'll be glad you did when your karma comes to get you.

Sea Turtle Inc. is Expanding

Is it just me or do you feel like you never hear about certain causes until they are expanding?  I had never heard of Sea Turtle Inc. before today, but they just bought another acre of land where they plan to build two to three thousand more viewing tanks, an amphitheatre and more.  They rescue, care for and return sea turtles to the wild in addition to offering a permanent residence to those that cannot be rehabilitated.  A capitol campaign to finance the expansion will begin September 3rd.  Please click here to learn how you can contribute to this amazing operation.

What is "the good life"?

Do you think turtles and tortoises feel global inequality the same way humans do?  The above African Tortoise lives in Africa - a symbol of strength, surviving on foliage as those around him avoid starvation with whatever scraps of nutrients they can find.  Meanwhile, in America, a three-legged African Tortoise gets a wheel glued to his shell so he can scoot around happy and free on the streets of Washington.  Which one is "living the good life"?  Is it better to roam free in your natural habitat or be pampered in an alternate reality?  I believe Pokey prefers the latter, but perhaps I'm merely justifying keeping her in a terrarium so I can monopolize her inspirational powers...

Snapping Turtle Love

I have to admit, snapping turtles aren't my favorite. They scare me a little. This guy loves them so much that he wants to show you how to pick them up and get them out of the road and away from danger. I hope you're up for the challenge because I'm still scared. I would probably use a stick and try to push it out of the street, although I doubt it is safer.

When Turtles Fly

Image by Arvind Balarman via freedigitalphotos.net

Ok, so I hardly play video games these days because I don't have time, but I might have to download this one:  When Turtles Fly.  It looks like I would get to fly a turtle rocket around the sky blowing things up while earning cash to buy upgrades and more for my amphibian space craft.  Plus, it's currently free on iTunes.  Are you thinking twice about this or rushing over for a "few minutes" of childlike fun like me?

Silly Stink Pot Smuggler

I've just learned of a very interesting type of African turtle - the stink pot turtle.  I know you are probably thinking that is a mean name, but what would you name a turtle that emits a foul smell when stressed?  Now, although this characteristic could be helpful for teaching amateur turtle owners when their pet needs attention, I still can't believe someone was dumb enough to attempt to smuggle them.  Did they really think their luggage wouldn't stink up the plane and draw attention?  At least the story has a happy ending... the turtles are happily swimming at an aquarium in Hampshire and the smell, like Elvis, has left the building.

The Hungry Honu

The Fed may remove honu from "threatened" list at the request of the Hawaiians. Apparently they've recovered so well since being placed on the list of protected animals that they are threatening a local fish population. So, to put things back to "normal", the Hawaiians want to harvest and eat a few Honu. I'm not sure how I feel about that... You?

Turtle Woodcut Print

I am always amazed at the beautiful things I find when I search for turtle items on Etsy.  Today I found this fabulous woodcut print.  I thought it was amazing enough to deserve a bit of extra advertising.  Perhaps it is a portrait of Pokey's ancestors?   Only the artist knows her muse....  Beautiful work Ms. Veal Kutlets!
